Can you introduce yourself?
Hi! My name is Ellis Tolsma. I am a freelance illustrator and visual artist from Utrecht, the Netherlands. I use a cheerful and graphic visual language inspired by vintage children’s books, patterns & toys. My work is characterized by geometric shapes, bold color combinations, abstractions, and often a little bit of a retro touch. I enhance this retro feel by printing much of my work with an old-fashioned riso printer. Based in Utrecht, I also run a small riso studio named: Studio Misprint. The name comes from the fact that I think making mistakes is a big part of the creative process and the fact that I love happy little accidents in my work.
How would you describe your creative world?
I would definitely define it as colorful and bright. I really want to bring some joy into this world and especially make the world more colorful, and less boring . I think it’s important to be inspired by the things and people around you, and I love teaching and showing people how to be creative. I think everyone can be creative, there’s a little bit of an artist hidden inside of everyone, and it just needs to get out.

How did this collaboration inspire you?
I have been inspired by Tiptoe even before this collaboration. I’ve seen Tiptoe objects in artists homes I really like, and I think the objects Tiptoe make are super versatile so you really can make your own world out of them. I often visit thrift stores looking for cool items, vintage trinkets & interesting furniture to add to my own home & collection. I think those things are always super inspiring, especially if you take them out of the context of the store. So getting to draw some of Tiptoes objects was really nice!
Can you tell us about a place where you feel good?
I feel really good where I live now, and especially the garden at my studio. The sun is coming through again and the garden is super big and beautiful.
