The SSDr chair in recycled plastic
SSDr: Simple, Solid, Durable and Recycled
The SSDr chair is a Simple, Solid, Durable and Recycled chair.
It is the result of a long and bold year-and-a-half of work, culminating in the creation of a beautiful, useful and durable object in an industry that still overwhelmingly uses virgin plastic. The SSDr chair marks a new milestone in our ambition to create sustainable furniture.
SSDr, the beauty of recycled plastic
In this version of the SSD chair, the seat and backrest are not made of wood but of recycled PP plastic. PP, or polypropylene, is a plastic with a wide range of industrial applications: food containers, automotive parts and household appliances. The legs of the SSDr are made of steel (infinitely recyclable, it is the most recycled material in the world).
The SSDr chair aims to prove that it is possible to give waste a second life by creating beautiful, useful and timeless objects. Integrating recycling and the upcycling of materials at the heart of our product design means looking toward the future of furniture.
The SSDr chair can be assembled in 2 minutes with just 1 screw. It is 100% recyclable and 100% made in Europe in partnership with SMEs with exceptional expertise, including our family-run workshops based near Chamonix!
Sustainability at the heart of the brand
TIPTOE’s mission is to shake up the furniture industry by offering thoughtfully designed objects, well made in Europe from sustainable materials and built to last.
The entire TIPTOE team shares these founding values and is more determined than ever to go further in this commitment to sustainability!
Aware of the plastic situation and the 359 million tonnes produced worldwide in 2018, we want to help curb this issue at our own level.
At TIPTOE, we work hard to offer innovative solutions and provide lasting answers when it comes to sustainability. Our mission also fully embraces the use of recycled or upcycled materials.
The SSDr chair, a lasting commitment
In 2019, our crowdfunding campaign enabled us to finance the first production run of the SSD chair: Simple, Solid and Durable. A success far beyond our expectations, with over 1,600 chairs pre-ordered in one month.
From this campaign onward, our plan was to develop a recycled plastic version of the SSD chair. It is therefore with great pride that we present the SSDr chair!
The SSDr chair stays true to the essential principles of the SSD chair you love. Simple, Solid and even more Durable.
Why PP plastic?
For this version of the SSD chair, we use PP plastic (polypropylene) because of its specific technical and mechanical properties, combining flexibility and strength. Polypropylene is a plastic with a wide range of industrial applications: food containers, automotive parts and household appliances.
Once the PP plastic has been collected, it is cleaned and sorted before being ground into flakes. It is then transformed into pellets, which are melted and injected into a mold specially designed to create the shape of the backrest and seat.
In the furniture sector, the vast majority of plastic objects use virgin plastic, and the integration of recycled plastic into manufacturing processes is still in its infancy. With the SSDr chair, the aim is to give waste a second life, to enhance its value and use it to create a new object that is beautiful, useful and durable.
An uncompromising design process
The SSDr chair is the result of a complex research and design process that lasted a year and a half.
As the recycled plastic supply chain is currently almost non-existent in the furniture sector, sourcing raw materials and finding suppliers are particularly difficult. Likewise, certain production methods need to be adapted to take into account the technical differences between virgin plastic and recycled plastic.
This process of becoming familiar with this new material required the creation of numerous prototypes that paved the way for the final version of the SSDr chair. To achieve this, it was necessary to invest in an industrial mold designed exclusively for the occasion.
The SSDr chair and TIPTOE tables: a thoughtfully designed harmony
True to the brand’s DNA, the legs of the SSDr chair are made of steel and feature the same colors as TIPTOE table legs. The colors were designed to pair beautifully with the wood of TIPTOE tables. The seat of the SSDr chair ensures ease and comfort.
The rounded shape and angled curves allow you to sit comfortably for several hours. Its ergonomics have been specially designed to make it suitable both as an office chair and around a dining table.
