The SSD chair
An ambitious project in TIPTOE’s DNA
“Designing the ideal chair for everyday life while minimising environmental impact at every stage of its life cycle.” That was the goal we set ourselves when designing the SSD chair. After two years of development and passionate work, we are proud to take you behind the scenes of our major project for 2019.
To fund the first production run, we launched a major crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform from 26 March to 26 April. Nearly 600 people took part and, thanks to this incredible enthusiasm, the SSD chair will soon be available.
THE SSD CHAIR: SIMPLE STRONG DURABLE
The acronym SSD refers to its core qualities: SIMPLE, STRONG and DURABLE.
The SSD chair can be assembled in under 2 minutes with just one screw, is 100% made in Europe and is crafted from durable, high-quality materials.
It is also comfortable, stackable, elegant and lightweight.
Why the SSD chair?
Every year, 20 million tonnes of furniture are thrown away in Europe and the United States. Among this waste are countless chairs.
The materials used and the production process are often responsible, which is why we believe every chair should be made from durable, high-quality materials while being offered at a fair price.
It was with this in mind that the SSD chair was imagined and designed: Simple, Strong and Durable.
The SSD chair is Simple
It is made up of just 5 simple, essential parts:
- 2 powder-coated steel legs
- 1 seat and 1 backrest in premium-quality wood
- 1 steel “lock” piece and its screw
The SSD chair can be assembled in under 2 minutes, with just one screw!
The SSD chair is Strong
SSD was designed to withstand life:
- Our steel tubes are virtually indestructible
- Our wood has been carefully selected from Europe’s finest craftspeople
- An engineering firm specialising in aerospace and automotive supported us throughout the entire development phase
The SSD chair is durable
The SSD chair was designed to minimize its environmental impact at every stage of its life cycle:
- 100% European production combined with responsible materials (wood from sustainably managed, PEFC-certified forests)
- Packaging made from at least 80% recycled paper
- When packed, it takes up 3 times less space than most chairs, reducing CO2 emissions during shipping
Technical information
The SSD chair measures 80.5cm high by 41.8cm wide, and the seat has a diameter of 41.8cm.
Lightweight, it weighs 4.5kg. Almost featherweight 🙂
Kickstarter: Why a crowdfunding campaign?
Kickstarter is an international crowdfunding platform that enables young projects to come to life thanks to the support of a community. This is our most ambitious project since our launch in 2015, which was also funded through a crowdfunding campaign.
To finance the industrial tooling and our first production run, we launched a pre-order campaign for 30 days, from March 26 to April 26, on KICKSTARTER.
Since the beginning of TIPTOE, we’ve been supported by an ever more passionate community, and we’re delighted to share this new adventure with you!

The SSD chair finishes
