Wall shelves

Wall shelves offer many advantages for interior design.

The size of your wall shelf will depend on how you plan to use it. The dimensions of the shelf board vary depending on whether it is a wall-mounted bookcase, wall storage, a wall-mounted bedside table or a simple wall shelf.

• Wall shelf : here, there are few constraints on dimensions. If you want a mini wall shelf, it can start from 15 cm, and for a larger shelf, the length can go up to 2 m. We offer several standard sizes for a wall shelf: 20, 30 cm, 45 cm, 60 cm, 90 cm, 120 cm and 150 cm. For the width of your shelf, it should ideally be between 15 and 25 cm.
• Wall-mounted bedside table : we recommend small dimensions. The length of the shelf board should be between 25 and 45 cm. For the width, it can be the same as the length for a square wall-mounted bedside table, or between 25 and 35 cm for a functional bedside table.
• Wall storage : the length of your wall shelves will depend on the number of items you need to store. As a general rule, the size of a standard wall storage unit is between 50 and 100 cm. For the width, it is between 20 and 30 cm.
• Wall-mounted bookcase : choose generous dimensions over 1 m, and even exceeding 2 m. For the width, the size of the books should be taken into account. Most are between 11 and 16 cm, but larger ones can go up to 20 cm. The width of your wall shelf can be between 18 and 22 cm.

The height between two wall shelves will depend on the objects you want to display. For a wall-mounted bookcase, you should measure the height of your books. Paperbacks and novels range from 15 to 25 cm, while comics or collector’s books can be up to 40 cm tall. So, for a bookcase with smaller books, the space between each shelf should be between 25 and 40 cm. For wall storage, again, you need to determine which objects you plan to place there. Measure your tallest items to determine their height, and add 5 cm for the space to the shelf above. In general, decorative objects are between 20 and 45 cm tall.

Our advice : to optimise space, place your tallest objects or books on your highest shelf. That way, you won’t be limited by the gap between your two wall shelves.

Designer wall shelves fit into every room in the home.

To determine the height of your wall shelf from the floor, several factors come into play.

• Linear installation : mount one long shelf horizontally or several smaller shelves in a row. This layout is ideal for an empty hallway. In a kitchen, place wall shelves about 50 cm above the worktop for easy access to items. Position shelves higher up for utensils you use less often.
• Vertical layout : create a library wall in your living room by installing several parallel wall shelves at equal intervals. Start about 1 m from the floor to leave space for small furniture.
• Staggered or staircase arrangement : for a more original look, arrange the wall shelves asymmetrically. This lets you vary the layout of the displayed objects and add a sense of movement to the room.
• Framing furniture : place wall shelves around your TV unit or above your desk to optimize storage space. In the office, position shelves 35–65 cm above the desk so they do not interfere with the computer screen.
• Adapting to the space : use corner shelves to optimize space, or align a wall-mounted bedside table in the bedroom with the height of your bed for added comfort.
• Playing with heights and contrasts : create a visual effect by choosing wall shelves in a color that contrasts with the wall. The colorful designer wall shelf from the PLI collection is ideal for this type of layout.

If you would like to place a decorative shelf in a room in your home, you are free to choose its height. Always keep practicality in mind so its position does not get in the way. For example, do not place it on a wall behind a door.

Installing a wall shelf with a BRACKET wall mount

To install your shelves, gather the following items: a shelf board, one or more BRACKET wall mounts depending on the length of your board, a pencil, a drill, screws, and wall plugs. You should allow for 3 screws and wall plugs suited to your wall per wall mount: Molly plugs for plasterboard walls, Fischer plugs for concrete and stone, or Bol plugs for hollow brick walls.

With Tiptoe, install your designer wall shelves simply, quickly, and without major work:

• Place your wall mount against the wall and mark the position of the three holes with a pencil.
• Using a spirit level, make sure your wall mounts are positioned on the same horizontal line.
• Drill the wall at the marked points and insert the wall plugs, then position the mounts and screw them in.
• Place the wall shelf board into the wall mounts and tighten the knob by hand. Finish tightening with the Allen key provided.

Installing a metal wall shelf from the PLI collection

The steel wall shelves from the PLI collection have also been designed to be quick and easy to mount on the wall. You will need a PLI wall shelf, screws and wall plugs (included), a drill or screwdriver, a pencil, and a spirit level. Then, the steps are very simple:

• Place the shelf in the desired position on the wall and use a spirit level to make sure it is perfectly straight. Mark the position of the two holes of the wall shelf on the wall.
• Drill the holes at the marked positions and insert the wall plugs.
• Position the shelf by aligning the holes with the wall plugs. Insert the screws into the shelf holes and screw them firmly into the wall plugs using a screwdriver or drill driver.
