TIPTOE x Jean André : Engraved Hearts
The limited-edition TIPTOE x Jean André collaboration
After Lorraine Sorlet, it is Jean André’s turn to reinterpret our iconic stool, the LOU, alongside the TIPTOE designers. A true collaboration based on a shared desire to create a unique, beautiful, eco-designed object.
From tattooed hearts to hearts engraved on wood
Jean André, illustrator and co-founder of the Bon Jour Tattoo Club tattoo studio in the 18th arrondissement, is known for his light, minimalist tattoos. His signature? Hearts intertwined with words, endlessly customizable. For TIPTOE, he chose different moods: “Amour,” “Karma,” and “P’tit cul.” Sweet, sometimes playful words, full of character for all our interiors.
TIPTOE and Jean André, a subtle blend of expertise
“What I found coolest about the collaboration with TIPTOE was applying tattoos to furniture. The connection between needle tattooing and wood engraving was interesting and deepened the timeless effect I appreciate in tattoos. Plus, there’s a real consistency with tattooing, engraved on skin, and the laser process used for the collaboration. I also like the idea that the stool becomes part of people’s ‘interior’ landscape. They’ll be able to use it, see it every day, and pass it on over time.”
The choice of words
“We wanted to do lots of things together, but we limited the collection to three stools, trying to create consistency in tone, mood, and humor through the words. We chose three objects that can live together or separately: “Amour” is a great classic at the studio, we tattoo it a lot; “Karma” is more spiritual; and “Ptit’cul” is funny! We’ve never tattooed it at the studio yet. For the legs, we went with white to contrast with the black of the engraving and the color of the oak. The result is understated and bright.”
Pieces hand-engraved using a laser process, in the Jura, and signed by Jean André
“When it comes to manufacturing, we chose high-quality materials. I think it’s great that the object is engraved in a living, noble material like oak, and especially that it comes from sustainably managed forests. It’s responsible, it’s ethical. The fact that it’s produced in Europe and hand-engraved in the Jura adds another dimension to the finished product.”
“I’m used to choosing the brands I work with, and looking at the ways they work, produce, and manufacture. It’s important to me to be aligned with the values of the brand I collaborate with. This collaboration is a beautiful project for me.”
