For the first time, TIPTOE has been working for 2 years on a new table system! In this new Design Lab article, discover behind the scenes of this launch like no other.
TIPTOE was born in 2015 thanks to its iconic colorful table leg and clamp system. Today, it is what the brand is known for and it truly launched this mission to create furniture that is sustainable, thoughtfully designed and well made.
Imagining a new table system is therefore a real challenge and a nod to the brand’s beginnings, driven by your enthusiasm. Today, we’re talking with Thibault, Alexandre and Constant from our design team to learn more about this unexpected new product!
Why a new table system at TIPTOE?
Initially, the request came from our professional clients, architects and specifiers. We were often asked for dining tables or desks in round, larger formats, or in new materials such as recycled plastic.
So we designed a system that makes it possible to create tables with no limit on length, with flawless ease and efficiency. NEW MODERN enriches our range by opening up new possibilities for formats, finishes and uses, with the same commitment to durability.
How is this new table different from the TIPTOE table leg? What is it made of?
It’s a different system and a different aesthetic! The TIPTOE table leg lets you create a modular table and adapt a wide range of tabletops to it thanks to its clamp system. NEW MODERN tables stand out for their ability to offer larger table sizes and new materials.
A NEW MODERN table is made up of 2 steel leg arches into which two stainless steel beams are inserted. The tabletop then clips onto the structure and is held in place by a crossbar for the largest tables, before being screwed in. Thanks to its high efficiency, both industrially and functionally, you can design your space exactly as you wish: the largest dining table format for hosting friends, the round format for your kitchen, an individual desk for comfortable remote working, or XL workbenches in the office for your meetings, conferences…
How is the NEW MODERN system sustainable?
As with all TIPTOE objects, the 5 principles of sustainable design guided our thinking. NEW MODERN tables are made with durable materials, 100% in Europe. A NEW MODERN table is composed of a small number of highly robust parts for easy assembly, all of which are also easily replaceable if needed. This also allows for flat-pack delivery to reduce environmental impact.
We chose steel for the legs, as it is the most recycled material. For our table tops, we always use the best materials and manufacturing processes available to us. For example, the oak tables are made from solid blockboard fir, then veneered with PEFC-certified oak. The varnish is water-based to ensure long-lasting durability and easy maintenance. Whenever possible, we use recycled materials such as recycled plastic.
What were your inspirations for the NEW MODERN tables?
“When innovating in furniture, the problems to solve are as complex as those of major constructions,” said Jean Prouvé.
NEW MODERN pays tribute to the Modern movement that shaped the history of architecture and furniture. Born in the 1920s, Modernism took hold between 1950 and 1980 with clean-lined furniture that was beautiful, highly functional and durable. Since 2015, this philosophy has driven us to create functional, modular and minimal furniture while incorporating an essential criterion in response to the challenges of our time: the durability of objects and materials.
NEW MODERN is a reference to industrial design, with nothing superfluous. As always, we had to push the exploration to an advanced level of complexity in order to design a structure with elegant simplicity and honest design.
What are the specific features of the range for professionals?
The range has been designed especially for professionals. Workspace design plays a major role in wellbeing and productivity. Meeting tables, XL work benches and individual desks have been designed to meet today’s needs, at home or in an open space, in a simple and ingenious way. Openings in the tabletop for routing power cables and cable trays help keep the workspace tidy and organised. The large formats allow you to work comfortably, alone or with colleagues.
How did you preserve the TIPTOE DNA?
We’ve created a simple table system that assembles quickly and easily, like all TIPTOE objects.
We still use steel for the base, the most recycled material in the world, and we continue to innovate with tabletops made from wood or other recycled materials. You’ll find your favourite colours: Cloud White, Graphite Black, Eucalyptus grey, Rosemary green and Ash Pink.
TIPTOE’s industrial manufacturing logic and focus on functionality help create a minimalist aesthetic free of any artifice. The design of NEW MODERN is simple and timeless, colourful or understated depending on the combinations.
