Your home decor in industrial style
If you love the atmosphere of New York lofts but don’t know how to bring it into your own interior, this article is for you! A decor trend that has been popular for many years, industrial style appeals with its charm that is both authentic and contemporary. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to live in a disused factory to embrace it. Industrial decor is above all a way of life that can be enjoyed in every room of the home.
Layout, materials, decor: we share all our tips for decorating your interior in industrial style !
Industrial style, TIPTOE’s signature
Industrial style has its roots in the working-class world of the early last century. In former industrial production plants, people sought out robust furniture, durable materials and functional decorative objects. Against all expectations, this style, rich in history, found its place in our homes. A favorite in New York lofts and other disused factories transformed into artists’ studios, industrial decor and the loft spirit are now making their way into every interior.
Wood and steel furniture
To bring industrial style into your interior, there are a few codes to follow, especially the combination of wood and metal. TIPTOE has made it its mission to create furniture that is as beautiful as it is durable. From the very beginning, the brand stood out by reimagining the modular steel table leg, designed to be paired with tabletops of your choice, including eco-certified or recycled wood tops.
Our lookbooks for industrial decor
A pioneer in the pairing of steel and wood, TIPTOE stands out with its design-led, resolutely industrial furniture. Discover dining tables, desks, benches, coffee tables, chairs and stools right away in our Loft Spirit or Countryside in Paris lookbooks. Give your interior a look that is both vintage and on-trend with TIPTOE designer furniture.
All the hallmarks of successful industrial decor
Cosy industrial, chic industrial, rustic industrial: industrial style has no equal when it comes to fitting effortlessly into every interior. Whatever inspirations you plan to pair with your industrial decor, there are certain rules to follow to identify the industrial style.
1. Open up the spaces
To echo converted industrial factories, opt for large open spaces without doors or partitions to let light flow freely. And for those who can’t live with open kitchens, think of the timeless glass partitions! They create a separation between two rooms in the home while bringing in light. To still define your spaces, floor rugs are the ideal solution.
2. Perfect your lighting
An iconic element of industrial decor, metal pendant lights steal the show in the kitchen above the dining table, bar or worktop. Our tip? For a successful loft feel, use two, or even three: play with a layered effect to create a loft atmosphere. A single pendant light can also beautifully decorate a small industrial-style kitchen.
3. Give pride of place to raw, robust materials
Industrial style is built on robust materials designed to stand the test of time. With a brick wall, a concrete floor, parquet flooring, exposed wooden beams on the ceiling and wood and steel furniture, you can’t go wrong. Perfect timing, as most of the industrial-style furniture designed by TIPTOE combines wood and metal.
4. Hunt for and upcycle old decorative objects
Industrial style goes hand in hand with retro. To accessorise your industrial decor, there’s only one solution! Browse and hunt through flea markets near you in search of treasures as rare as they are vintage. For an interior that feels uniquely yours! Upcycle old retro furniture into true industrial-style decorative pieces.
5. Add a twist to your industrial decor with a touch of colour
While black, grey and brown remain the signature colors of the industrial trend, nothing stops you from introducing a decorative accessory in sunny yellow, electric blue or any other bright color into your interior décor. Quite the opposite! A touch of color will bring brightness to your industrial décor.
For an industrial-style kitchen and dining room
The steel table leg
The TIPTOE community brilliantly reinvents the codes of industrial style in the kitchen or dining room. To bring this New York trend into her home, Pauline mixes all the decorative essentials we mentioned above. A glass partition to separate the kitchen while letting light through, mismatched chairs, a vintage coffee maker: an industrial décor highlighted by this recycled wooden tabletop turned dining table. Paired with the 75 cm table leg, it gives the room character.
The BIG LOU bar stools
For his industrial-style kitchen, Julien also opted for a glass partition. Well, almost! His partition isn’t quite like the others, as it is made up of mirrors. A clever reinterpretation to enlarge the space and reflect light throughout the room. To sit around his steel and metal table, the designer bar stools offer comfortable, design-led seating. And still very much in the spirit of an industrial workshop! Finally, a special mention for the cement tiles on his backsplash, which soften the atmosphere. Further proof of just how easy it is to make industrial style your own.
The designer bar stool is an essential piece of furniture for decorating an industrial-style kitchen the way it should be. Available in several shades and leg frame colors, our wooden bar stools are the ideal piece. Choose darker shades for a fully industrial look.
Industrial style belongs in the living room too!
A cosy living space par excellence, the living room is a place to unwind and relax: it needs to feel warm and comfortable. For an industrial décor, you need to strike the right balance between factory-style furniture and cocooning pieces. The leather sofa remains the centerpiece of your living room. We love Chelsea’s aged leather club armchair. A vintage piece that feels delightfully on-trend!
She also created a DIY industrial-style coffee table in wood and metal using our small steel table leg, available in many colors.
For an even cosier effect, Mélanie dared to go for the colorful velvet version. And this mix&match of materials and colors—what boldness! The precious character of the sofa’s ochre tone is echoed by the raw charm of the stained oak of the LOU stool. A perfect demonstration that the line between Scandinavian style and industrial style is finer than it seems.
For an even more industrial look, you can combine metal shelves with metal lockers. The metal shelving in Mélanie’s industrial-style living room lets her store her vinyl records while displaying her decorative objects.
The coffee table is undoubtedly the other essential piece in an industrial living room. True to the pairing of raw wood and metal, Hannah Ford has furnished her industrial-style living room with our VERSAILLES coffee table in recycled solid oak. With its herringbone reclaimed wood tabletop, it was bound to make an impression.
Her XXL bookcase, filled with decorative objects and accessible via a wooden ladder, not to mention her superb black glass partition, are decorative features that give her living room a completely industrial style.
To introduce industrial decor into your interior, make the most of the raw look of robust materials already present in your home. In her industrial-style living room, Jenifer used her vintage brick fireplace, which she modernized with an assortment of green plants.
To complete her industrial decor, she installed a DUKE solid oak bench. The clean-lined design of this bench fits into every style of interior decor, and particularly well with industrial style.
Dress the living room walls
The industrial decor of your living room should not forget to dress your walls. To do this, nothing could be simpler: TIPTOE designer wall shelves in wood and metal, retro decorative objects, a vintage poster and a mirror—and you’re done! A wall shelf lets you display all your decorative objects. Our decor idea? A large metal clock can also easily dress a wall for an industrial look.
A bedroom and office in an industrial style? It’s possible!
If you thought industrial style was incompatible with the intimate feel of a bedroom, the TIPTOE community is here to prove otherwise. To introduce industrial decor into your bedroom, simply create a office area just for you.
Create an industrial-style office nook
In the angled corner of her attic bedroom, Isabelle created a minimalist office nook that embraces the codes of industrial style. We love the combination of the vintage desk lamp and the SSDr chair in recycled plastic. An all-black look to copy right away!
To decorate your office area, consider adding a few vintage decorative objects and a pendant light. For wall decor, choose vintage posters, a clock or retro mirror, and wall shelves. Our tip? If you don’t have brick walls at home, go for brick-effect wallpaper!
Pair dark wood with black metal
A more formal workspace, Margaux’s desk corner is reminiscent of old curiosity cabinets. A black metal lamp, retro transistor radio, black-and-white print, cactus on a stand: so many objects come together in a joyful jumble. The good idea? Replacing two 75 cm TIPTOE desk legs with a metal apothecary cabinet with drawers. For a desk unlike any other!
The combination of dark wood and black is always a winning formula for an industrial-style desk.
Dark colors are the perfect allies of industrial decor. As proof, Catherine’s wall-mounted desk: the combination of black metal and the raw wood of her wall shelves really impressed us. This layout also frees up floor space and, above all, saves her room — clever! Anja’s industrial-style desk corner is understated, simple, but incredibly effective for an industrial-style bedroom. The steel wall lamp and raw wood furniture create a loft atmosphere all on their own.
And what about the entryway?
For those who want to embrace industrial decor as soon as they step through the door, you should know that creating an industrial-style entryway is absolutely possible. Once again, the TIPTOE community is an endless source of inspiration.
Welcome to Nadine’s home! In this original entryway, it’s all about a blend of influences. The black metal shelves, standing out in contrast against the pure white walls, display handcrafted objects and trinkets from the far corners of the world. Who would have thought ethnic chic would pair so effortlessly with industrial style?
More understated, Charlotte’s entryway is no less successful. The solid oak DUKE bench is easy to spot at the foot of this incredible metal spiral staircase. You could almost imagine yourself in a factory from the beginning of the last century. Near the door, the wooden stool with metal legs makes a lovely plant stand.
In short, at TIPTOE, you can bring an industrial style to every room in your home with industrial-style designer furniture in wood and metal. And always perfectly on trend! What are you waiting for to get started?
